Plumbing Tips: How to Save Water This Summer

We all make an effort to save water. But it can be hard – especially in the summer. Here tips to help you save water this summer – and decrease you water bill.

Make sure the outdoor hoses are turned off.

Make sure garden hoses are turned off when not in use

Kids love hoses when it’s hot – and they get heavy usage during the summer when we need to keep our vegetable gardens or fruit trees happy.

But have you ever left a hose on – even just a trickle – and forgotten about it?

That small trickle can add up to a lot of wasted water, and create potential problems. Besides a higher water bill, a hose that is not shut off all the way can turn that trickle of water into runoff once the soil is saturated.

Take a look each night to make sure your outdoor hoses and sprinklers are turned off.

Water the garden at the beginning or end of the day

The sun can evaporate the water you give your plants. So watering plants in the morning or evening can help you reduce potential evaporation and decrease the amount of water required to keep them vibrant.

Washing dishes by hand uses more water than a dishwasher

As well as being more convenient in terms of sterilization and speed, the dishwasher is more efficient. It only uses three gallons of water, whereas washing the same dishes by hand can typically use around 27 gallons of water.

Toilets leaking?

An easy way to make check your for leaks is to put a little food dye in the tank, wait, and check the bowl. If dye stays in the tank, your fine. If the color shows up in the bowl, you may have a leak.

Insulate hot water pipes

We spend a lot of time waiting for water to heat up, especially in the shower or at the sink. Insulating hot water pipes allows for the hot water to be hot as soon as it comes out of the pipe. A tankless water heater is another potential solution to explore.
