Is it time for a new dishwasher?

Posted by Agentis on May 16, 2018 1:50:28 PM

Every night, we depend on our dishwashers to do a chore we all dread.

We get so used to the convenience, that when it starts to show signs of failure, it can throw your routine off.

The reality is that, while we trust our dishwashers to be reliable, we don’t conduct regular maintenance until something goes wrong.

Now that you have your dishwasher fixed.....How about your disposal?

Seeing as the average lifespan of a dishwasher is 7-12 years, it is very possible you’re in need of a replacement.

Here a few signs it may be time for a new dishwasher.

Standing water at the bottom of your dishwasher

It is fairly common to observe water collecting in certain mugs or dishes after a cycle in the dishwasher, but a sign something is wrong if there is water at the bottom of the dishwasher after a cycle.

It may be as simple as a blockage line that prevents proper draining, or it could be something malfunctioning with the dishwasher. If you’re good tackling plumbing problems, and have the proper tools to get to the source of the problem, you may be able to clear the problem or at least diagnose it.

Dishwasher Door Will Not Close

A broken latch or lock will often require you to repair or replace your dishwasher. This is typically because the device is unable to run a wash cycle if the door is not securely latched, protecting you from a water leak and causing a bigger mess.

Depending on the brand and model that you have, this could be a very simple and inexpensive repair. Additionally, if it’s a relatively new dishwasher, then a broken latch may even be covered by the warranty. Unfortunately, if your dishwasher is pretty old, then you may find it difficult to find the necessary parts to repair.

The dishwasher is rusty

Rust is a clear sign that your dishwasher may be on its last legs. Not only is it a sign that there is probably a leak somewhere in the unit, but your dishes are also being exposed to rust, which can have negative health effects.

If you observe rust, it is a sign that the outer metals are falling off, exposing the interior metals which are prone to rusting. While this is one of the more common reasons for rust, it’s possible it could have fallen off a rusty pot or pan. To see what is causing the rusty dishwasher, run an empty cycle along with citric acid to see if the rust disappears.

Water is leaking out of the dishwasher

You should never, under any circumstance whatsoever, observe water leaking from the dishwasher onto your floor. There are numerous different causes for this, but the most common is a leak inside the dishwasher.

This is a serious issue with your dishwasher, so while an external leak can be repaired, you may as well replace the defective unit entirely.

Dishes Not Hot After Running Dishwasher

One of the key functions of a dishwasher is to disinfect your dishes. So hot water and a heat dry are important. If your heating coil is malfunctioning, your dishes are probably not drying properly. And if you have an older model dishwasher, you may want to weigh the cost of fixing it and having a service call against buying a new dishwasher.

Strange Noises Inside the Dishwasher

Is your dishwasher making loud or unusual noises when it is running? Take a look inside to make sure nothing has fallen in and is rattling around while it runs. If it looks clear but is still making noise when it runs, it may be a problem with the motor and an indication that something is broken.
