My Water Heater is Making Noise. What Does this Mean?

Posted by Agentis on Sep 7, 2017 12:52:46 PM

It’s not uncommon for a water heater to make noises – specifically crackling and popping.

But what do these water heater noises mean? Should I be concerned? Is it time to replace my water heater?

Is it time to replace your water heater?

Popping or Crackling Noises in your Water Heater

The popping noises signify a sediment buildup in the tank. Over time, minerals from the water will build up in the tank, and this problem can worsen if you never flush the tank.

The noises occur when the water in the tank boils the sediment that has fallen to the bottom. (It’s steam bubbles escaping as the particles heat up.)

While it’s fairly common, the presence of sediment can keep your water heater from operating efficiently. Also, too much sediment can cause a leak in the tank. So, it may be a good time to get your water heater checked by a plumbing professional.

Often, the fix is simple – drain the tank and flush the sediment.

But there are precautions to take because the water can be very hot and there are electrical or gas connections that need to be turned off prior to draining. It’s also a good time to have a professional inspect the tank for other damage and to make sure it’s operating efficiently.
