Things You Should Never Put down the Garbage Disposal

Want to keep your garbage disposal running for years?

The easiest things to do is to avoid putting certain things into it that can cause clogs are damage.

Is it time to replace your garbage disposal?

  1. Coffee Grounds. Talk to any plumber and he’ll have war stories for you about the dreaded coffee ground sludge clog. Best way to avoid it? Do not put them into the sink – either compost or put them into the trash.
  2. Grease from cooking meat. When these fats congeal, they turn into a waxy material that is a major source of garbage disposal and pipe clogs. Best way to keep your disposal operating smoothly? Pour these fats out into a can or other receptacle while they are still in liquid form, let them harden, and throw them in the trash.
  3. Egg Shells. Another known culprit of clogs. Ever seen egg whites stick to a surface, well, egg shells can stick to your drain too causing major blockages. Compost or put them in the trash.
  4. Pasta. Think about pasta sticking to a colander. These can be tough to remove once they dry. Same thing can happen inside the disposal. Choose the compost or trash for old pasta waste.
  5. Potato Peels. Another glue-like substance when it expands and gets wet. Once it dries, it’s a problem in the garbage disposal.
  6. Pits from Fruit. While they will not stick and clog, trying to crush pits in the garbage disposal these can damage. Compost or trash.

While this is not a comprehensive list, if you think about how various foods expand and adhere to your pots and pans, this will be a good indicator to help you decide which items are best for composting or trash.

Extend the life of your garbage disposal and be mindful of what you put into it.
