Plumbing Tips and Prevention: Why Is My Water Bill so High?

Posted by Agentis on May 2, 2017 12:30:00 PM

When the weather warms up, we tend to use more water. Hotter weather. More showers. More watering in the yard.

According to the EPA, household leaks – on average – can account for more than 10,000 gallons of water a year. They also cite that in ten percent of homes there are leaks that waste 90 gallons or more per day.

What are some common sources of water leaks?

Worn out toiler flappers can cause a toilet to run constantly because the seal is no longer tight. These are easy to replace and cheap.

Dripping faucets and leaky valves. Generally easy to fix and not expensive, repairing household water leaks can save homeowners about 10 percent on their water bills.

Sprinkler leaks can be big water wasters. According to the EPA, a leak of only 1/32nd (about the thickness of a dime) can waste about 6,300 gallons a month.

So, be ready for the warm weather and keep your water bill down by stopping the leaks. You can use the savings on something more fun like new barbeque. (Learn how to stop a massive leak by shutting off the main valve)
